Georgie's Story

Education doesn't have to be lots of children

sitting in a room facing a whiteboard.

“Oxford as a city fascinated me; I met a number of parents with backgrounds in education who were looking for new teaching approaches because conventional schooling alone wasn't working for their child. Education seemed more explorative than where I grew up in Surrey and parents were open-minded to alternatives, from homeschooling and private tutoring to Reggio and Steiner schools. I had been tutoring alongside my studies since I left school and although I was captivated by innovative teaching methods, I wanted to teach in state schools for a few years to gain more traditional teaching experience.

After two years of teaching at two schools in Oxford and one in London, I couldn't escape the overcrowded feeling of schools; I had over 200 students at times and not nearly enough hours in the day to give my undivided attention to all of them. So, when I moved to work at my next school in London, I asked to teach smaller groups of students who needed extra support in English in addition to my usual GCSE and A-level teaching. The idea was that these KS3 students would receive English lessons in groups of 6:1 for one year to give them the confidence and tools to rejoin and excel in larger groups. These classes quickly became the hours I looked forward to most and my students thrived in the calmness of the class.

After a total of four years in schools, I decided I wanted to dedicate my time to private tutoring and homeschooling whilst also studying towards my Assessment Practising Certificate (APC), which will enable me to carry out diagnostic assessments for dyslexia. The Cove was created to develop confidence in the classroom, to teach in a calm and safe learning environment which welcomes parents, and to inspire students to 'think outside the box' in day-to-day life, as well as in exams.”

Testimonials

"Georgie tutored both our boys, ages 8 and 10, in English over the course of a year. Georgie is a great teacher and adapts her teaching approach and content to suit the child. Both our boys benefited enormously from Georgie's tutoring and their English grades also improved. Our younger child has dyslexia. Georgie developed an excellent programme of work that kept our son engaged and motivated which is not easy to do when a child struggles with English. Our son's confidence also improved as he began to achieve better results so there were multiple benefits."

“Georgie worked with my 10 year old daughter to help her learn her maths times tables. The sessions went extremely well and were amazingly effective. My daughter loved working with Georgie and ultimately was able to remember and apply what she learned with her.

Many thanks to Georgie and her teaching method. I highly recommend her.”

“Georgie has a magical way with children. She was our nanny during quite a difficult time when I had two children under 5 and was pregnant with our third. I gave her a lot of responsibility and she rose to the occasion wonderfully! My boys always respected her and listened to her, but also just hugely enjoyed being around her. She is caring, patient, smart, and responsible. We were heartbroken to lose her when she went off to Oxford, but we always kept in touch. She remembered the boys for their birthdays and always asked after them. When she finished her degree we were lucky enough to keep having her babysit for us when she had occasional free evenings and the boys were thrilled. She is an exceptional person who has a very special way of reaching and teaching children. We couldn’t be more positive about her!”
